Well folks, here I am again
after six months or so. Not that anyone would ever miss me if I go away for
good. But the thing is, I haven’t had much to say on this platform. I’ve told
my fellow blogger, Martha, that I’ll be rejoining the blogosphere again, but
somehow I never get around to it.
I saw a video the other day by
a woman in her mid-eighties or older. She still looks great at her age, and she
inspires with her always-upbeat-self. In one of her videos she talked about
platform building and such, and how she’s done checking stats and likes and
loves and comments – because who has time at her age to be caught in an
artificial world when there’s a natural world out there waiting to be enjoyed.
And the more I contemplate
this, the more I realize why I don’t blog more often. It’s because I love
nature. I love walking in the woods to the tune of birdsong. Down that nature
trail is an aisle of divine beauty. Being outside beats the computer any day.
I recently told a friend that
my phone is off half the day, and I may or may not even get online the other
half. Life is too short to be caught up in artifice. Social media is all about
projecting an image of yourself. It’s about presenting to the world a version
of yourself that may or may not be false. It’s a venue through which many cry
out for attention.
Having said all that, you know
as well as I do that there’s no other way in today’s world to make it as a
writer. But having an online presence, though it seems to be a must these
days, is counterintuitive to the contemplative heart – or is it just me who
struggles with this?
Drop me a line in the comments
and let me know if I’m the only one – or if you too have struggles with social
media overkill. And also, if you have reconciled these opposites – the
necessity of social media and the spiritual need for solitude and silence – how
do you balance these opposites?
You're definitely not alone, Debra. For me, giving up Facebook and Twitter (now X) ages ago has really freed up my time and done some serious decluttering of my mind. However, keeping up my blog and following others whom I find inspiring and fun is a satisfying way to stay in the loop and keep long-distance friendships strong. It is a balancing act, for sure, but doable. Blessings, my friend, and thanks for the mention above!
ReplyDeleteYou inspire me, friend. I knew that you'd abandoned most of social media - all except the blog, which seems wise. Glad we are still connected here - and on rare occasions via phone. Oh, and by the way, did you know Dawn Sievers from the blog world? She's no longer with us, as she has crossed the thin veil into eternity.
ReplyDeleteI am a 68 year old retired lady living in Montreal, Canada. I am only on Blogger. I used to be on Facebook for decades but shut down my account a few months ago and don't miss it.
ReplyDeleteI don't want to be on anything else other than Blogger. I see people having account in so many places and it honestly makes my head spin.
Warm greetings to you. God bless you.
Linda, You are a wise woman to forego much of social media. It does make your head spin! God bless you!
DeleteThank you so much, Debra. And Martha who commented before me....she is a lovely person whom I "met" on Blogger and we have been following one another's blogs for months now. Thank God for meeting nice people. You have a lovely blog.
DeleteI also met Martha on Blogger - she is a jewel!
DeleteI just wanted to say one last thing, and I apologize for the extra comment...Blogger doesn't have the capacity to edit, so plese forgive this extra comment. The art on your post is beautiful. I also love nature, I enjoy taking long walks in Nature. I used to have a blog years ago (from 2012 to 2017), called Linda's Peaceful Place. I had no computer for more than 7 years and lost access to the old blog. I started this new one, Linda's Relaxing Lair, at the end of March this year and am so grateful to have found some bloggers from when I had my old blog.
ReplyDeleteI post just twice a week now, Mondays and Thursdays, and this suits me well. On my old blog I posted almost daily, mostly daily, but twice a week is good for me now. I love your blog and am following you now as well. God bless you and have a wonder filled week. :)
Dear Linda, so glad you rejoined the blog world; your posts are delightful! I'll be posting again soon, since August is approaching, and I thank you for letting me know your posting schedule.
